In the late 19th century the Arts and Crafts movement grew in reaction to
mass industrialisation. In Scotland, the Glasgow school, influenced by Charles
Rennie Mackintosh developed a distinctive flavour.
A late Georgian design from the early 19th century. The finely turned roundels
surmount the reeded legs and frieze to create a fireplace of classical form.
This mantel incorporates raised and fielded panels in the legs, frieze and
corner blocks. The shelf has a concave scotia moulding whilst the legs have
quadrant outer returns.
